A drying tunnel reduces the water content of the soap to the level your formulation needs, and a cooling tunnel brings it to the temperature the mill, plodder and press expect. Key Features

Moisture target depends on the product

Laundry bar soap is normally dried to a low moisture content so it stays hard and lasts. Toilet soap is finished at a higher moisture level because a very dry bar becomes brittle and hard to stamp. There is no universal number — the correct target comes from your formulation, and we will ask for it before sizing the tunnel.

Tunnel length is a capacity decision

Dwell time, belt speed and the number of zones set how much material the tunnel can process. A tunnel that is too short for your throughput forces you to run the belt faster, which means less drying, which pushes the problem downstream into the mill and the press. Length should be decided at the same time as line capacity, not afterwards.

Humidity control, not just heat

Hot air alone does not dry soap reliably in a humid climate, because the air cannot take up more moisture once it is saturated. Ask for the humidity control arrangement explicitly if you are in a humid region — this is exactly the kind of specification that is quietly left out of a cheap quotation.

Get the cooling stage right before stamping

Stamping quality is very sensitive to bar temperature. Too warm and the bar smears and sticks to the die; too cold and it cracks at the edge. The cooling stage is what makes stamping repeatable, so set it up as part of the same commissioning exercise as the press.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a drying tunnel for a small line?

Sizing depends on whether the soap arriving from your supplier or from saponification is already at the right moisture. Many small plants using purchased noodles skip drying and control moisture in the mixer instead. Tell us your raw material and we will advise whether the tunnel is needed.

Can drying and cooling be combined in one tunnel?

Yes, in a multi-zone design: a warm drying zone followed by a cooling zone. This is common where floor space is limited, and it works well as long as each zone can be controlled independently.
