Most bad soap machinery purchases are decided before the contract is signed, by leaving one question unasked. These nine checks take about an hour and will save you far more than that.
1. Size by output, not by price
State your target in bars per shift, convert it to kg/h using your bar weight, then add 20–30% headroom. Buying a machine that exactly matches today’s sales means running it flat out, with no ability to recover from a short stop. Under-running a slightly larger machine is almost always better than over-running a small one.
2. Decide about vacuum before you buy the extruder
An extruder without vacuum is cheaper, and for plain unbranded laundry soap it may be enough. For anything that will be looked at — branded bars, retail toilet soap, translucent soap — trapped air shows up as pinholes, weight variation and cracking. This is a decision you must make at purchase; it is not an upgrade you can bolt on later.
3. Ask what the wear parts are and what they cost
Screws, barrel liners, blades, dies and belts wear out. Ask for the price and lead time of each before you order the machine. A machine that is cheap to buy and expensive or slow to repair is the worst possible combination, and this is exactly the information a quotation normally omits.
4. Confirm the electrical specification in writing
Motor power, voltage and frequency must match your supply before manufacture. 380V/50Hz, 415V/50Hz, 220V/60Hz and 440V/60Hz are all common in different markets, and getting this wrong means either a transformer and a derated motor, or new motors entirely. Put the specification in the purchase contract.
5. Ask for the real capacity, not the headline capacity
Advertised capacity is usually the maximum the machine can pass under ideal conditions with perfect feed. Real output is lower. Ask what output the machine actually achieves on a typical formulation, and on soap rather than on water.
6. Get the layout drawn into your building
Send your floor dimensions, door widths and ceiling height and ask for the machines placed in your actual space, with service access marked. Machines that fit together on a list frequently do not fit in a building, and the cost of discovering this after shipping is severe.
7. Plan the spare parts order with the machine
Order blades, a spare screw where applicable, seals, heating elements and the electrical consumables you cannot buy locally at the same time as the machine. They travel in the same container for almost no extra freight. Buying one blade later usually costs more than the blade.
8. Ask who commissions it and for how long
Installation, commissioning and operator training determine whether the machine ever reaches its rated output. Confirm in writing what is included, how many days, who pays travel and accommodation, and whether the training covers changeover and maintenance as well as basic operation.
9. Agree the payment terms and the inspection right
Standard terms are a deposit with the balance against documents, but agree before shipment how you will verify the machine: a video of it running, a third-party inspection, or your own inspector. A pre-shipment inspection costs little and settles arguments that are far more expensive later.
Put it in the purchase order
A quotation is not a specification. Before you pay a deposit, write the machine model, capacity, electrical specification, included accessories, spare parts, commissioning days and delivery time into the purchase order, and make sure both sides sign the same document. Almost every dispute we hear about from buyers comes down to a specification that was described one way in a quotation and understood another way by the buyer.

How much should I spend on my first machine set?
For a small scale start, a practical machine set begins from under US$3,000, and a fuller small line from around US$8,300. What matters more is that the set can be extended: choose a melting tank and mixer with volume headroom and a cutter and stamper with enough size adjustment to cover what you plan to sell.
Is it better to buy one good machine or several cheap ones?
Prioritise the machines that determine product quality: the mill, the plodder (vacuum if you are branding) and the stamper. Those are the three where a cheap machine shows up in the product. Melting, transfer and packing are more forgiving.
