After milling, the soap mass still contains air; if you extrude it as-is you get bars with pinholes, cracks and uneven weight. Key Features

Why vacuum matters

Without vacuum, air trapped during mixing and milling ends up inside the bar. It shows up as surface pinholes after drying, as weight variation on your packing line, and as cracking during stamping. Pulling vacuum in the extrusion chamber removes that air before the soap is formed, which is the single biggest visible quality difference between a cheap line and a proper one.

Simplex or duplex

A single-stage plodder is enough for small outputs and is easier to maintain. A duplex plodder runs the soap through two screws in series, which gives a more homogeneous mass and a higher output at the same screw speed. If your capacity target is above roughly 500 kg/h, or if your bars must pass visual inspection at retail, choose duplex.

What to check on the screw and barrel

The screw and the barrel liner are the wear parts. Ask what material they are and whether the screw is replaceable on its own, because replacing a full barrel assembly costs several times more than replacing a screw. Stainless steel contact parts are standard; the wear surfaces need to be hardened.

Matching the plodder to the rest of the line

The plodder must be sized against the mill upstream and the cutter downstream. If the plodder is faster than the mill, it starves and the billet becomes inconsistent. If it is slower, you paid for capacity you never use. Tell us your intended hourly output and we will confirm the size rather than leaving you to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a plodder and an extruder?

In practice the names overlap. An extruder forms and pushes out the soap through a die; a vacuum plodder does the same job but with a vacuum chamber that removes air first. If a supplier lists only an extruder, ask specifically whether it has vacuum — that is the feature that changes bar quality.

Can it run both laundry soap and toilet soap?

Yes. The same machine handles both. What changes is the soap formulation, the working temperature and the die and cutter settings, not the plodder itself.

How often do I replace the screw?

It depends on abrasiveness of the formulation, running hours and how well the machine is maintained. Treat the screw and barrel liner as scheduled wear parts and keep one spare screw in stock — a stopped line costs far more than a spare part.

What capacity do I need?

State your target in bars per shift. We convert that into kg/h using your bar weight, then recommend a plodder with roughly 20–30% headroom so that minor stops upstream do not stall the line.
